"One of my favorite Scriptures is found in the first part of verse 6 of Psalm 116: "The Lord preserves the simple."
"Anyone with mechanical knowledge will tell you that the more complicated a machine is the more easily it will break down. We use this principle as a standard when we buy any machinery we need.
I think this verse can teach us something about the relation between our lifestyle and the Lord's work in us. The more complicated our lives are, the more likely we are to break down into tension and anxiety. The cares of our world can choke out the sustaining presence of God's living Word, Jesus.
In the area of meals and kinds of foods we eat, the Lord may be telling us to simplify, too. I know that He wants us to eat well and to enjoy the food He has created for us, but I am sure that all of us could make the whole process of planning and cooking and eating, less elaborate.
Simplicity is a standard against which to measure every area of life, from recreation to furniture. We should ask the Lord for wisdom in sorting out our priorities.
God has said He will preserve the simple. I like to think of being simple in terms of using what I really need instead of what I think I need or want in order to keep up appearances.
All I can say is, Lord show me Your way to simplicity."
